Bed Bugs
Negative Characteristics: Bed Bugs feed on our blood whilst we sleep, and leave nasty, itchy spots.
Redeeming Characteristics: Only that they don't spread disease.
Quick Tips:
- Don't remove beds, furniture, pictures, soft furnishings from the room until you have treated them or you will just move the bugs elsewhere.
- Thoroughly clean infected rooms. Bag clutter, vacuum clean, wash. Don't remove items yet.
- Thoroughly and carefully treat the likely hiding places (starting at the bed and armchairs etc) with any of the products listed below.
- Don't use chemical insecticides on the mattress, there are plenty of non-toxic alternatives below.

Bed Bugs: Description & Life Cycle
Bed Bugs are closely associated with their principle prey, humans, so are to be found close to human sleeping places.
Bed Bug description:
- adults are about 5mm (2/10th inch) long
- reddish brown in colour, purple after feeding
- well developed antennae
- six legs with clawed feet
- simple eyes
Bed Bug life cycle:
- eggs are 0.8 - 1.3mm long x 0.4 - 0.6mm wide
- cemented to surfaces in large numbers
- first stage nymphs hatch after 10-20 days and are 1mm long
- nymps are similar to adult but lighter in colour
- egg to adult takes 9 - 18 weeks depending on temperature
- adults live for a further 9 - 18 months
- adult and nymph can live for months without food
- can breed throughout year in suitably warm conditions
