Flies

Flies

Negative Characteristics: Flies spread disease through feeding on infected detritus and then landing on our food. They are the vectors of some very nasty diseases.

Redeeming Characteristics: They are good food for the rest of the food chain.

Quick Tips:

  • Hygeine is king. Keep everything clean and all food stored safely.
  • Take a multi-pronged approach to controlling flies.
  • No need to use chemicals. There are plenty of safe alternatives listed below.
  • Use fly screens and other proofing methods. They are cheaper in the long run.

Question

Q.
I had dead mice under the floor due to pest control poisoning. We have thousands of flies. The smell in the house is unbearable and so is the constant flies. This is being going on for several months now. I've tried bombing the place, fly sprays etc. Though no new mice sighting have happened for months the dead mice smell is still awful and has now spread upstairs. I think the mice are comming from the dirty man next door. Please dont say rip up the floor as its not a viable option. What can I do, the place is now uninhabitible....! :-(

A.

I really sympathise as I know the smell can be horrific. I think it may be rats though as mice don't smell for very long. Clearly it has been on-going for several months so I suspect more rodents are dying and wonder if someone is conducting an on-going poisoning campaign, perhaps your neighbour?

Of course the flies are hatching from eggs laid on the bodies of the dead rodents and whilst the bodies are there and have moisture in them, then eggs will continue to be laid.

Check with you neighbours to see if anyone else is using poison. If you can't have it stopped, try and make sure rodents cannot get into your house to die - broken air vents?

Rentokil produce very good deoderant packs - see our website - but you will need quite a number and of course you are better to get the packs as near as possible to the source of the smell.

You are right, the best way is to remove the bodies. It is unusual for the smell to last for months even from rats. Do you think a larger animal might have died  there? Cat, Fox etc? I don't know your house situation, I am only guessing.

Q.
We have a house in cyprus and sand flies are a particular problem as they are very small and the mesh on the fly screens does not prevent them gaining entry. We purchase local fly/mosquito sprays and spray the bedrooms each day but they are not 100%. On a local forum someone who hails from New Zealand had brought back a spray containing cypermethrin ( cyanamid ripcord ) and commented that they only had to spray the room, curtains and screens once every 2/3 months and had no problems but they cannot obtain this spray in Cyprus or the UK. Would your product give this kind of protection?

A.

I do agree, they are horrid little flies. I would have thought you might need to spray cypermethrin every month as it is not very persistant in the environment. However, if it worked OK every three months that is much better. Our Protector C contains 0.09% w/w cypermethrin and will definitely deal very effectively with sand flies. The ripcord product might have a higher concentration of cypermethrin, but I would be cautious about spraying anything stronger than Protector C on a regular basis.
