Ants are one of the most common household pests and most homes will suffer from them on occasions.

Know your enemy

The most common ants that enter your home are black ants but if you are unlucky you may suffer from pharaoh ants. These may look to make a nest within your home if conditions are right.

If you have any shrubs close to your house with aphid infestations like green fly, treat these also, as they attract ants.
Ants enter your home as they are foraging for food, mainly sugary or grease based foods and water.

Dealing with them is within most people’s powers and there are many DIY ant control products available.ants in the home

Before you go on the attack

One of the first things to do is deter the ants from entering the house. Start by ensuring you clean up all food spillages and waste.

Clear away all crumbs and food debris off work surfaces.

Try and follow any ant trails to the point of entry and seal any cracks and crevices with a caulking product. It will be difficult to seal them all but fill as many as you can.

Weapons available

There are many products available to deal with ants they usually come in a powder puffer, spray can, or gel bait form. There are also some specialist baits available for dealing with pharaoh ants.

Deployment

Clean around entry points with a detergent as ants leave a pheromone trail for others to follow. Spray the entry points or perimeter with a residual insecticide such as Dethlac.

Powders such as Residex P applied into cracks and crevices or where there is a deal of ant activity also give good results.

There are pre baited ant bait stations available such as Maxforce LN-Ant Bait Stations. These can be used both indoors and outdoors and are convenient and easy to use.

There are also Ant Bait Station Kits that comprise Bait Stations, Ant Gel and Residex P. You can top these up and re-use.

For the more troublesome pharaoh ants there are products like Biopren Pharaoh Ant Colony Eliminator, a very effective product.
