The carpet beetle itself is perfectly harmless and does no damage. The adult lives only a few weeks in which time the female can lay hundreds of eggs. Adult beetles can fly so infestation can be very fast. They are often seen in April, May and June, seeking egg-laying sites, and the grubs are most active in October before they hibernate. The larvae (“woolly bears") of these small, oval beetles, however, have outstripped the clothes moth as the major British textile pest. These fibre-attacking beetles do not carry disease and do not bite, therefore are not considered a risk to human health. The prickly hairs that give them their name can cause skin irritation in some people.

They are a nuisance pest as they can cause damage to textile products such as wool, fur, leather, silk and other natural fibres.
