Synthetic dusts usually contain pyrethroids. They were originally made to synthetically mimic natural pyrethrum, which is produced from the oil of the African chrysanthemum flower. Over the years scientists have been able to produce pyrethroids with more complicated molecules and insecticides have become more potent. Today, synthetic pyrethroids have no or low odour, last longer, can be used in lower concentrations, are manufactured without petroleum by-products, have a low order of toxicity in mammals and are available in various formulations such as wettable powders, granules and dusts to deal with the management of a variety of insect pests including cockroaches, ants, wasps and spiders. They work by disrupting an insect's nervous system, leading to weakness and death. Synthetic dusts are broad spectrum insecticides, meaning that most insects that come into contact with the powder will be eliminated. They are designed to kill after contact and often provide long lasting protection. Some formulations only last 1-2 days in the environment, others 60-90 days. Choose the product which most effectively deals with your specific problem. Some insects such as bed bugs and german cockroaches may be able to recover from first generation pyrethroids such as permethrin and d-phenothrin. Second generation pyrethroids such as cypermethrin and deltamethrin enhance insecticidal activity and effectiveness.
