There are two main types of trap used for the control of pest mammals, spring traps and cage traps (live catch). Cage traps come in various sizes depending on the target species. They are all basically a wire box with one or two open ends. The doors are triggered by a foot plate or hook. They can be used to catch any animal that is not protected, must be inspected at least once a day and the target animal dispatched quickly and humanely. Non-target animals must be released unharmed.
Spring traps are used for the destruction of rats, mice and small vermin such as squirrels or moles. Every effort should be made to avoid the capture of non-target species, traps should be firmly anchored and checked at least once a day.
